New Madrid citywide yard sale, annual clean-up days are scheduled

NEW MADRID, Mo. - Those planning a bit of spring cleaning and decluttering have some help ahead.

The Chamber of Commerce is hosting a citywide yard sale April 1 and 2. This will be followed by the city’s annual clean-up days from April 4-7.

There is no charge to participate in the citywide yard sale, according to New Madrid Chamber of Commerce Director Christina McWaters.

The Chamber is using its Facebook page as a listing for those planning a yard sale that weekend. To be listed McWaters said residents can just post in the Facebook comment section the location and times of their sale or they can give the Chamber of Commerce office a call at 748-5300 and leave a message with the time and location.

“There are a lot of people who like to go to yard sales and come into town each year for it,” McWaters said. “Having the listings on our Facebook page makes it easy for them because they can just pull it up on their phones.”

She added she believes timing the event with the clean-up days will work well.

The clean-up services are for residential customers only. However, there are some rules that citizens must be aware of if they plan to take advantage of event.

Residents are asked to place items that need to be removed next to the street or alley by April 4.

No tires, yard waste, paints or chemicals will be picked up. Any batteries and appliances must be set out separately for pick-up separately.

State regulations require all compressors and doors be removed from appliances before they can be picked up by the city services. There are no exceptions to this rule, city officials said.

Residents who leave out items after April 7 will be billed for their removal.

“Please participate in this special annual effort in order to keep New Madrid clean and make it more beautiful,” officials urged.
