Harry White

SIKESTON — Harry Stratton White, 90, of Sikeston and Batesville, Arkansas, passed away at Woodlawn Heights in Batesville on April 3, 2022.

He was born on Nov. 9, 1931, in Sikeston, to Harry S. and Emma White, née Thompson. He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Mattingly White, in 2007, as well as his parents, his “Aunt Jack” (Lorena) Thompson and his beloved dog Happy.

On May 18, 1956, he married Frances Lair Mattingly in Holly Springs, Mississippi. During their 51 years together, most of which were in Sikeston, they enjoyed playing bridge, eating out together, and, most of all, tending to their beautiful flowers. Golf and the St. Louis Cardinals were enjoyable pastimes for him.

He played football at Charleston High School and graduated from there in 1949. He then joined the U.S. Navy that year and served as a hospital corpsman in the Korean War until 1953. From 1956 to 1958, he served in a pharmacy while in the U.S. Air Force stationed in San Antonio. He graduated in 1961 from the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) with a degree in pharmacy. He worked as a pharmacist in the Sikeston area for fifty years until he retired in 2011.

He was married in 2009 to Jennie Bradford from Middleton, Ohio, until 2020, at which time Harry relocated to Batesville, to be near one of his daughters.

Harry is survived by two daughters, Diane Ellis (John) of Batesville and Crystal White (Jay Scala) of New York City, New York.

Many thanks to Janie, Yvette, Angela and the staff on the Willow unit at Woodlawn as well as Dana and the caring staff at Caring Hands Hospice for being so kind and attentive to Harry.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. until the graveside service at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 7, 2022, at the IOOF Cemetery in Charleston, Missouri, with the Rev. Dr. Thomas N. Bass officiating.

Military honors will be provided by the U.S. Navy and the Missouri Military Honors Program.

Arrangements are by McMikle Funeral Homes Inc. in Sikeston.
