Investigation underway in Steele shooting
According to reports from Steele Chief of Police Billy Joe Stanfield, an officer responded to a shots fired call at 243 West Main Street.
Upon arrival the officer observed a large group of approximately 100 people fleeing the area on foot and in vehicles. The group was attending a party given by a local resident.
The officer made his way to the residence and located an individual with a gunshot wound to his leg. The officer was attempting to render first aid to the victim, when several members of the group that had remained, put the victim into a private vehicle and drove him to the hospital.
The Pemiscot County Sheriff’s Department, Missouri State Highway Patrol and several other area agencies arrived on scene to assist with the investigation.
Officers later learned that there were actually three people that sustained gunshots during the incident on West Main, and had been sent to area hospitals by private vehicles. Two of the victims were from Steele, a 25-year-old male and a 27-year-old male; the third victim was a 26-year-old male from Blytheville, Ark. The victim from Arkansas remains in critical, but stable condition in an area hospital.
Chief Stanfield requested and received assistance from investigators with the Missouri State Highway Patrol Division of Drug and Crime Control and the Pemiscot County Sheriff’s Department.
The investigation is ongoing.
