SIKESTON — Fire destroyed a vacant Sikeston residence Thursday afternoon.
At approximately 2:45 p.m., Sikeston DPS responded to a fire at 315 Ruth Street.
“When we arrived there was heavy fire and smoke,” said Sikeston DPS Capt. Derick Wheetley.
Because the structure was fully involved, it took fire fighters a short time before they could attack the fire.
“The structure had a funny layout and we had an issue getting to some of the fire,” Wheetley said.
One firefighter was treated at the scene for heat-related issues.
“Even though there was a breeze, it was humid,” Wheetley said.
Scott County Rural and Morehouse Fire Departments assisted Sikeston DPS as well as New Madrid County Ambulance.
Firefighters were on scene for two hours and the structure was a total loss.
