Wheat harvest just getting underway in Missouri

SIKESTON — With sunny, hot days in this week’s forecast, local farmers may be planning to take advantage of the dry weather to get their wheat crops out of the fields.

According to the Missouri Crop Progress and Condition Report released on Monday, winter wheat harvest was only at 2%, compared to the five-year average of 12%. However, the winter wheat condition was rated 1% very poor, 7% poor, 29% fair, 54% good and 9% excellent.

Also on Monday, the USDA Missouri Crop Production report said wheat production statewide is forecast at 44 million bushels, up from 38% the previous year. Harvested winter wheat area in 2022 is forecast at 620,000 acres, which is up 27% from last year, according to the report. The winter wheat yield is also forecast at 71 bushels per acre, up 6 bushels from 2021.

According to the Missouri Crop Progress and Condition Report, there were 3.2 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending June 12. Temperatures last week averaged 73.3 degrees statewide, 2 degrees above normal. Precipitation averaged 1.20 inches, 0.18 inch above normal. Topsoil moisture supply was rated 4% short, 72% adequate and 24% surplus. Subsoil moisture supply was rated 3% short, 86% adequate and 11% surplus.

Elsewhere in the state, a majority of the corn and rice crops are emerging while soybean planting is nearing completion.

Corn emerged was 89%, compared to the five-year average of 92%. Corn condition was rated 5% poor, 19% fair, 67% good and 9% excellent.

Soybeans planted was 71% complete, compared to the five-year average of 76%. Soybeans emerged was 56%, compared to the five-year average of 59%. Soybeans condition was rated at 3% poor, 35% fair, 57% good and 5% excellent.

Cotton squaring was at 4%, compared to the five-year average of 10%. Cotton condition was rated at 6% poor, 29% fair and 65% good.

Rice emerged was 95% compared to the five-year average of 92%. Rice condition was rated at 35% fair, 56% good and 9% excellent.
