SIKESTON — For 100 years, the Lions Club of Sikeston has enriched the Sikeston community and on Wednesday they were honored for their service.

Rep. Jamie Burger, was on hand at the Lions Club meeting Wednesday at Fox Haven Country Club, to award House Resolution 5892 to the club. The club will receive another proclamation on Wednesday when Sikeston Mayor Greg Turnbow is scheduled to make a presentation to the group.

Since the inception of Lions Clubs International in 1917, Lions Clubs have offered service-minded citizens the opportunity to give back to their communities.

The Lions Club in Sikeston was chartered on June 26, 1922, has helped improve the community since its inception, including helping convince International Shoe to put a factory in Sikeston.

The Lions Club also supported the construction of a Frisco Railroad depot and the Sikeston Municipal Airport, which later became the home of the Missouri Institute of Aeronautics, a training base for World War II.

The Lions Club also has helped fund the Kenny Rogers Children’s Center, a new YMCA facility and additions to the Missouri Delta Medical Center which culminated in 2021 with the awarding of an $84,000 matching grant from Lions Club International Foundation for acquisition of state-of-the-art cancer screening technology.

“Well, you know our Lions motto is ‘We Serve,’” said Rodney McConnell, Lions past district governor and past club president. “And that’s just what club members have been doing now for a 100 years. Most likely, there will always be a need for community service. So, we hope our anniversary celebration might inspire more local citizens to become involved in providing that service as we begin the next century of the Lions of Sikeston.”
