SIKESTON — Robert Murray “Bob” Mackie, age 76, passed away Wednesday, June 22, 2022, at his home in Sikeston.
Bob was born Oct. 25, 1945, at Lenoir, North Carolina, to the late Henry P. Mackie Jr. and Elizabeth Fowler Mackie and grew up in Granite Falls, North Carolina. As a young man, Bob traveled west and while living in California, he enlisted in the United States Marines and would serve two tours in Vietnam. He received numerous awards and medals for his faithful service to his country.
A diesel mechanic, Bob loved to work on cars and engines. An avid fan of cars, he especially loved Corvettes and racing. He was a member of the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) for many years.
Bob lived in Sikeston for over 40 years. He was employed in construction and then with 74 Auto in Sikeston until his illness prevented him to return.
Surviving of the home is Peggy Rice, his longtime companion and the love of his life. They enjoyed traveling, antiquing and fishing together. If you saw one, you saw the other. Their love for one another was incomparable.
Also surviving are his brothers and sisters, John W. (Nancy) Mackie of Clover, South Carolina, James H. (Judy) Mackie of Granite Falls, Ann Mackie Sigmon of Hickory, North Carolina, and Sara Mackie (Dennis) Queen of Newton, North Carolina; nieces and nephews, Scott, Stephen, Elisa, Andrew, Annette, Rob, Kelli and Kevin; as well as a number of great-nieces and -nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, June 25, 2022, at the McMikle Funeral Home in Sikeston.
Bob’s wishes were to return to his hometown of Granite Falls and be buried beside his grandfather. Full military honors will be conducted.
The Mackie Funeral Home of Granite Falls will oversee the funeral and burial.
