SIKESTON — City officials and members of the community got a look at the new splash pad at Lincoln Park Wednesday morning during a ribbon cutting ceremony.

The splash pad is the latest improvement in the park, which includes the donation of several trees from Allen Wire.

Sikeston Parks and Recreation Director Dustin Care said splash pads have been discussed for Sikeston parks from even before he was hired. He said a “hybrid” splash pad was put in Legion Park but this is the city’s first “real” splash pad.

The 2,300-square foot splash pad was built at a cost of $140,000. The design uses 40-50 gallons of water per minute with a water-to-waste system.

“You hit the button everything runs on a sequence of four minutes,” Care said.

The new splash pad features five overhead features with seven ground sprayers with multiple features running at the same time.

Care said the splash pad will be open from roughly the beginning of May until mid-September to early October.

“Our guys worked hard internally,” Care said.

A contractor installed the concrete while the Parks Department and employees with building maintenance worked along with Care and Jay Lancaster, Sikeston Director of Public Works, to make the splash pad a reality.

“We all kind of got together, and made this what it is right now,” Care said.

Along with the splash pad and new trees, there are other improvements to be made.

“We’ve got a few benches to add and a few other amenities but (the splash pad) is functional and ready to go,” Care said. “We’re hoping that it’s another improvement on a long list of things.

“This is a great addition to our parks. Hopefully with the success of this one and downtown we can continue to expand and maybe add a few more.”
