SIKESTON — Carlisle Construction Materials is continuing to build their plant south of Sikeston and are now ready to start hiring employees.

Marcie Lawson, president and CEO of the Sikeston Regional Chamber and Area Economic Development Corporation, gave an update on Carlisle at the Sikeston Regional Chamber luncheon Thursday held at the DAEOC building in Downtown Sikeston.

“They are here, they are building, they are excited and they are actually starting to hire some of their employees,” Lawson said.

Carlisle will hold a hiring event from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m Oct. 4 at the Miner Convention Center.

Lawson said they are looking to hire about their first third of employees adding that those hired will be required to travel over the next three to four months.

Training for those hired will be in three, three-week stints.

“There will be incentives for them to do that and they will move up faster throughout the organization,” Lawson said.

Lawson also informed those at the Chamber meeting that she had been participating in Sikeston schools’ strategic planning process and that the Economic Development Department would also do some strategic planning in the near future.

Katie Merideth with the SRC said they had been working closely with Sikeston Public Schools as well in an effort to enhance and add to the S.O.A.R. program.

S.O.A.R., which stands for Students Observing Area Resources, is an ongoing program that is working to funnel a variety of Sikeston students into the work force in Sikeston.

“We are looking to expose them to different industry jobs, different businesses,” Merideth said. “We’re trying to get them exposed to the opportunities here in Sikeston.”

Merideth said they have had a lot of kids in the program and are working hard to reach more. However, the program is still in its infant stages so the results are not easy to see as of yet.

“Right now those kids are still in school and are thinking about where they’re going to go, but eventually they’re going to show up in the workforce and say ‘I knew I wanted to work for Unilever because I got to tour it when I was in high school,’” Merideth said.

Taylor Deere, SRC membership and program director, told those in attendance that the annual SRC Awards Banquet would be held Oct. 20 at the Sikeston Municipal Airport.

Connie Dement with Leadership Sikeston informed Chamber members that a comedian and live band would be at the Sikeston Jaycee Rodeo Sponsor Barn on Sept. 24. The event is a fundraiser for Leadership Sikeston in which they will be kickstarting a foundation for Sikeston Parks and Recreation.

Joel Evans with DAEOC also briefed those in attendance about Oktoberfest, which will be held from 4-10 p.m. in Downtown Sikeston Oct. 8. A story on the event will appear in a future edition of the Standard Democrat.
