SIKESTON — Firefighters battled a large field fire for hours just outside of Sikeston Monday.
According to Jeremy Perrien, fire chief for the Scott County Rural Fire District, firefighters were dispatched to County Highway 448 for a report of a large field on fire with several structures in danger at approximately 2:30 p.m.
The fire was located to the west of the Jeffers Motorsports Park Drag Strip.
Perrien said they initially requested mutual aid from Oran, Sikeston and Miner Fire Departments, however, the dry conditions and wind were working against the fire fighters.
Additional resources from NBC Fire and the Morehouse Fire Departments were then requested.
Fire crews were on scene until approximately 9 p.m. Monday working to extinguish the fire that scorched many acres.
There were over 200 hay bales on fire and Perrien said there are still several hay bales that will be smoking for a few days.
The South Scott County Ambulance District also stayed the duration of the incident checking on all crews and providing rehab for firefighters. There were no reported injuries.
“We want thank all agencies for their help in gaining control of this incident,” Perrien said.
