An ongoing search and rescue for a Sikeston, Missouri, hunter missing since late Sunday continues in Carter County.

According to Ozark National Scenic Riverways, National Park Service personnel along with Missouri Highway Patrol Aviation Division, Missouri Department of Conservation and Carter County Emergency Response teams have been combing the ground near Cave Spring southeast of Van Buren to locate 58-year-old Phillip Carnell of Sikeston, who was reported missing Sunday evening when he didn't come in from hunting near Cave Spring.

The search continued Monday night and into Tuesday.

Emergency managers said they appreciated the outpouring of support, but requested potential volunteers wait to receive a search assignment before driving to the area. Emergency crews asked individuals to stay clear of the Cave Spring and the Lost Man Cave Road so aviation crews could work from the air to spot Carnell.

“We are organizing search volunteers in order to keep a record of areas that have been checked and to ensure all volunteers are accounted for when arriving and leaving,” said a post via Ozark National Scenic Riverways’ social media. “Too many vehicles congesting roadways may hamper the movement of emergency vehicles,”

To ensure safety for everyone involved, anyone interested in volunteering should contact Carter County Dispatch at 573-351-8536 to be added to the list and await an assignment.
