CHARLESTON, Mo. — Charleston R-1’s new superintendent has taken over earlier than planned.

Charleston High School principal and head basketball coach Jamarcus Williams was officially named superintendent of the Charleston R-1 School District following a special school board meeting Tuesday, Jan. 24. Williams, who was scheduled to assume the superintendency in July, will now begin his duties effective immediately, the district announced Wednesday.

The move by the Board came after outgoing superintendent Jeremy Siebert, after nearly three years in the position, announced he would be taking an extended family medical leave now through his retirement at the end of June. He will remain available as a consultant to Williams and the district during what he expects to be a smooth transition. He also expressed gratitude for his time in Charleston.

“I would like to thank the Charleston R-1 Board of Education for their compassion during this difficult time,” Siebert said. “It has been a very difficult two months for our family, and with the support of the Board, my Central Office staff, Mr. Williams and the entire administrative team, I was able to be by dad's side through this. I am and always will be proud to be a Blue Jay.”

Williams brings 10 years of educational experience into his new role and said he plans to work with the Board to bring Charleston R-1 schools into a new era. Among their initial priorities are facility updates, an evaluation of district business practices and a focus on student success, he said.
