Gail Hammontree

This is the story of Linda "Grammy" Gail Boyer Hammontree. Gail was a wonderful woman who was loved, is missed, and will always be cherished. Grammy as she was known to everyone, had nine beautiful grandbabies who were her world: Ahnyia, Isabella, Declan, Mollie, Willa, Jase, Skadi, Gabriella and Valfreyja. Gail was an amazing mom, daughter, sister, fixer of boo-boos, and friend. 

Gail’s story starts on Oct. 26, 1965, the fourth child to Jerry George and Linda Faye Moore Boyer, known to everyone a Poppy and Rammy, in St. Louis, Missouri. Gail is the younger sister of Jerry “Pete” Boyer, Deborah Crowley, and Monte Boyer. She is the older sister of Lisa Boyer whom she has resided with the last 15 years of her life. 

When Gail was just 3 years old, Poppy and Rammy moved their family to East Prairie, Missouri, where Gail would spend her childhood, grow up, make many lifelong relationships, and go to school. Gail was a cheerleader for the East Prairie Eagles. She graduated in 1984 from East Prairie High School. She met her former husband and father of her children in East Prairie. Gail would go on to soar outside of East Prairie as an Airforce wife. She was married to Michael Hammontree who gave her three beautiful children who will carry on her many memories and recipes. Mike and Gail are the proud parents of Ashleigh (Timothy) Pettis, Aaron (Orin) McPherson and Justin (Sally) Hammontree. 

Gail’s family moved from Alaska to Utah after Justin said “look mom a doggie” was in their kitchen window. Gail screamed so loud, she scared the grizzly staring back at her. During the time in Utah, While Gail was taking care of kids when her husband was deployed overseas, Ashleigh found their “blue punch buggies.” Her family moved back to Missouri in 2003 where her children would attend and graduate from Cape Central. Gail loved gifts of all shapes and sizes, especially the teeniest, sweetest gift Aaron gave her weighing as little as 3.3 pounds. Gail would also pick up a bonus daughter along the way, Megean Shelton whom she loved like her own flesh and blood. 

Though life would have its twists and turns, Mike and Gail would remain active in their children’s lives. Gail would later live with her baby sister, Lisa, who many would call “her person” as Lisa would often say, I GOT YOU. Gail’s family has always been awfully close. Her favorite thing was to be a Grammy. Her grandchildren were her heart and joy, there is no denying that. Her grandbabies as she called them, were the people she loved the most. It was sure to be a crazy time at Grammy’s house filled with special moments for anyone who walked through the door. 

It is with deepest sorrow that we announce, after her short but brave battle with cancer, Gail found peace in knowing that she would be Grammy in Heaven to Justin and Sally’s unborn children. Heaven has gained its newest Grammy and angel, Linda (Grammy) “Gail” Boyer Hammontree, who passed away March 24, 2023, at 4:29 p.m. She passed peacefully surrounded by her children, siblings and other close loved ones. The path to Heaven was cleared by her parents, Rammy and Poppy. Her grandbabies: Jane Ellen, Alice Faith, and Preston Gage Hammontree waited at the feet of Jesus for their Grammy’s love. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Lori Ann Boyer.

Please join us in the celebration of life as we conclude Gail’s story on Friday, April 7, 2023, at The Arcadian in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, at 2 p.m. with Pastor Michael Reece and Pastor Chris Vaught of Connection Pointe in Jackson, Missouri, officiating.
