Wing’s first set of first graders say farewell to school

SIKESTON — Wing Elementary student Devin Ezell was one of the first students to enter the then-new Sikeston elementary school building located on General George E. Day Parkway four years ago.

The elementary school’s construction formally began in summer 2018. The open house for the school was held in August 2019. Devin began first grade the same year the elementary school opened on Tuesday, Aug.13, 2019, and was photographed by the Standard Democrat as he entered the building.

Since the Standard Democrat captured Devin’s first day of school at Wing, it seemed only fitting to take his photo on his last day at Wing Elementary, too.

As Devin entered the building Monday, May 15 on his final day at Wing, he shared his thoughts and feelings about his farewell day at Wing Elementary. The fourth grader pondered what he enjoyed best about Wing Elementary and what he will miss the most.

“I really like the teachers,” Devin said. “They really take the time to teach you and help you with everything.

He continued: “I’m going to miss the school. I’m going to miss my room; it’s really calming.”

Monday also marked the last day of the regular school year for all Sikeston R-6 students. For those who registered by May 15, summer school for remediation, reinforcement and enrichment for all grades will be offered from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays from June 5-22.
