MATTHEWS, Mo. — Five people walked away with only minor injuries after their car rolled on a rain-soaked roadway.

According to the Missouri Highway Patrol at 1:45 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 6 on Highway H, a half mile west of Matthews, a car driven by Karron Carter, 39, of Blytheville, Arkansas, struck standing water on the highway. The vehicle ran off the right side of the roadway and overturned.

The Matthews Fire Department was paged to the accident and upon arrival first firefighters found two children were out of the vehicle with the driver and two other passengers still entrapped. Matthews firefighters were able to extricate the three and provided first aid to the victims.

According to the report from the Matthews Fire Department, two of the children were pulled out of the vehicle by a passerby, who saw the crash.

“Twenty-year-old Destiny Brant without hesitation or regard of her own safety, swam through four-feet deep water to pull the two young men out of the vehicle before the first firefighters arrived,” the Department reported. “We would like to publicly thank Ms. Brant for her heroism and putting her own safety at risk to help these young men in their time of need.”

The vehicle’s driver and passengers Leatha Yowk, 64; two 12-year-old boys; and a 15-year-old girl received minor injuries. They were taken by ambulance to Saint Francis Medical Center for treatment.
