SIKESTON — Police are investigating the shooting of a 17 year old after several male and female juveniles met to fight early Tuesday, Aug. 8 in Sikeston.

Shortly after midnight Tuesday, Sikeston Department of Public Safety officers responded to a disturbance in the 200 block of Broadway in Sikeston, according to Sgt. Tyler Rowe, public information officer for DPS. After the call was dispatched, officers south of Broadway reported hearing gunshots from the location of the disturbance.

“Officers responded to the area and spoke to a witness to the event, who reported hearing a disturbance and gunshots outside of their residence,” Rowe said. “The witness described what they saw to be a fight in the middle of the street between several subjects. While officers were securing the area and speaking with the witness, communications received a report from a hospital of a victim with a gunshot wound.”

Hospital staff informed officers a 17-year-old juvenile male with a gunshot wound had been brought to their facility for treatment, Rowe said.

“During the investigation, officers were able to determine several male and female juveniles met in the area to fight,” Rowe said. “It was reported there were active participants in the fight and others that went to observe. During the fight, occurring on Broadway, a firearm was displayed and shot, striking the male juvenile.”

Currently, the name of the victim is not being disclosed and their condition is not being released, Rowe said. The incident remains under investigation and is being investigated by Sikeston DPS Criminal Investigation Unit.

“We are asking anyone with information about this incident to please call 573-471-4771 and ask to speak with a detective or call the anonymous tip line at 573-475-3774,” Rowe said.
