NEW MADRID, Mo. — A Georgia man will face trial for the deaths of two Sikeston residents.

A preliminary hearing was conducted Monday, Aug. 7 in Division II of New Madrid County Circuit Court for Cornelius Martel David, 33, of Powder Springs, Georgia, who is charged with two counts of first-degree murder; two counts of armed criminal action; and unlawful possession of a firearm, according to online court records. He was ordered bound over to Division I of New Madrid County Circuit Court for arraignment at 10 a.m. Oct. 10.

The charges stem from the Jan. 22 shooting deaths of Kiara D. Haynes, 33, and Breana C. Conner, 27. The couple were found outside apartments in the 800 block of South West Street in Sikeston in the early morning hours of Jan. 22 following a report of shots fired in the area.

An investigation by the Sikeston Department of Public Safety led to Davis, who was later arrested.

Currently David is being held without bond.
