SIKESTON — Mildred Bernice Lawson, age 97, passed away at Bertrand Nursing and Rehab Center on Saturday, Aug. 12, 2023.

Mrs. Lawson was born in her family home on Dec. 16, 1925, in Jonesboro, Arkansas, to the late Richard and Martha Leona French Stopfer.

Mrs. Lawson was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Jonesboro, Arkansas, until moving to Sikeston in 2005 where she was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. She retired from General Electric in the ’80s where she worked for 30 years. Bernice attended Valley View School where she played basketball. During her retirement she enjoyed crocheting, sewing, cooking, and spending time with her family. She married Donald Morgan Lawson in Jonesboro on Sept. 26, 1945. Mr. Lawson preceded her in death on Dec. 24, 2001.

Bernice is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Linda Lawson Scott (John) of Sikeston; one son and daughter-in-law, Donald W. Lawson (Deborah) of Ferndale, Arkansas; three grandchildren and their spouses, Stephanie Scott Palmer (Bryan) of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, Amy Scott Alcorn (Kyle) of Sikeston, and Benjamin L. Lawson (Samantha) of Little Rock, Arkansas; and eight great-grandchildren, John Austin Palmer, Emily Palmer, Isabella Palmer of Cape Girardeau, Hayden Alcorn, Lawson Alcorn, Elizabeth “Libby" Alcorn of Sikeston, Cecilia Lawson and Mara Lawson of Little Rock.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one sister, Geraldine Thatcher and one brother, Paul Gordon Stopfer.

A funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, Aug. 26, 2023, at 10 a.m. at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Sikeston. Father Colby Elbert will officiate.

Pallbearers will be: Benjamin Lawson, Bryan Palmer, John Austin Palmer, Kyle Alcorn, Hayden Alcorn, Lawson Alcorn and Wayne Lancaster.

Interment services will follow in Jonesboro Memorial Park Cemetery, Jonesboro.
