NEW MADRID, Mo. — Police are investigating after a suspicious package possibly containing fentanyl was delivered to a residence in New Madrid.

According to the New Madrid Police Department, a New Madrid resident on Thursday, Sept. 28 received two packages in the mail from out of state. The packages had the resident’s name on them.

“Luckily, they were suspicious because they had not ordered anything, so they did the right thing and immediately contacted the police,” the police department said in a social media post Thursday afternoon.

The package contained what is believed to be fentanyl, and lab results on the substance are pending.

“It’s possible that more of these packages may have been sent to other addresses in New Madrid,” the police department said.

The case has been turned over to the Southeast Missouri Drug Task Force for further investigation.

Anyone who receives a suspicious package, don’t open it and call the police department immediately at (573)748-5901.
