Pate Hogan

NEW MADRID, Mo. — Pate Collier Hogan, 46, of New Madrid passed away peacefully at Barnes-Jewish Hospital on Monday, Oct. 2, 2023. He leaves behind a void that will be felt by all who knew him.

He was born Sept. 21, 1977, to Matt and Charlotte Hogan of New Madrid.

He graduated from New Madrid County Central in 1996 and obtained a degree in technology from Christian Brothers University in 2000.

Pate was the IT Director at New Madrid County School District for 19 years and supported the Eagles in all the ways he could. He especially enjoyed keeping the score book for the NMCC high school basketball games.

Pate was an avid golfer, spending countless hours on the grounds of the New Madrid Country Club since childhood. As an adult, he was proud to have been a Club Champion and the head coach of the NMCC Golf Team.

Pate had a passion for competition barbecue, especially ribs; his were voted the “best ribs” at Cape Girardeau's First Annual Smokin’ Brothers indoor cooking event. He wanted to thank Lynn Bock, Mike Barnes and George Clay Broughton for teaching him how to barbecue.

Pate was also a trivia pro and loved playing in local trivia nights with friends. He was delighted to have been a recurring guest participant on his beloved podcast, “Trivial Warfare” — he never missed an episode.

Pate loved anything Star Wars. One of his biggest regrets was not keeping his Millennium Falcon unopened in the box as opening diminished its value.

Pate was known for being a bit ornery; he could make you mad as a hornet one day, and the next, he was buying you breakfast at Tasters and all was right in the world. He had a knack for quick, witty one-liners and zingers, often leaving him with the last word, which made his heart happy. These one-liners and zingers would become known as “Pate-isms.”

He had an enormous heart and a servant's spirit, he was remarkably generous, even to perfect strangers. Pate remembered small details about people and really cared for others.

Most of all, he loved and cherished his daughter, Ramsey — cheering her on in all she did and doing everything to make her happy. Pate supported her school fundraisers, took her to multiple Disney events and was over the moon delighted to take her to Disney World in the summer of 2022. Pate was an active member of his beloved Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Madrid.

Survivors include: his mother, Charlotte Hogan of New Madrid; daughter, Ramsey Hogan of New Madrid; brother, Nick (Natalie) Hogan of Jackson, Missouri; and nephew and niece, Jackson and Juliette Jones of Jackson, Missouri.

He was preceded in death by his father, Matt Hogan.

Visitation was from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 6 at Richards Funeral Home in New Madrid with the rosary prayed at 7 p.m.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 7 at Immaculate Conception Church in New Madrid. Interment followed at Mounds Cemetery.
