At 3:43 p.m. Oct. 20, Portageville Fire Department personnel were paged for a ditch bank fire on West 10th Street near the Cty Park. Before firefighters left the station, they were advised of a tree on fire at Sixth and Meatte streets. As one truck responded to the ditch fire, another responded to the tree fire. After observing thick black smoke while en route to the second fire, personnel determined a nearby house being demolished was also fully involved and threatening a neighbor's house. The first truck was diverted from ditch fire to assis with the structure fire. Once both trucks were on scene, firefighters quickly knocked down the fire. Firefighters remained on scene until around 5:30 p.m.
