SIKESTON, Mo. — For parents searching for something fun and unique for their children to do over Christmas break, the Sikeston Public Library will have just the thing for them.

Throughout the holidays, the Sikeston Public Library will once again host its boredom-busting STEAM playroom for prekindergarten through elementary-aged children.

The McAmis Community Room in the library opened for the season on Dec. 16 and will continue during regular business hours until Jan. 6, 2024. There is a sign-in sheet for the playroom, and children must be accompanied by parents.

Lisa Munger, children’s librarian at Sikeston Public Library, said this year’s theme is “All Things Wild Animals.”

Munger said last year was the first time she had the play room over Christmas break, and the theme was oceanography, which was a tremendous hit.

“There were about 65 to 70 people who came, and the parents really loved it,” Munger said.

This year, Munger set up a variety of table stations with animal-themed toys and STEAM toys/activities. A sensory table with toys, toy blocks, a kinetic sandbox, a science center table with various types of animals, and much more are among the play stations.

Munger said there is no fee for a child to attend the library, and that it is open to all children, not only those from Sikeston.

According to Munger, the playroom provides a reason for families to come out of the house and do something fun together.

“It’s just another way to get people into the library, but it also gives one more option for people around here to have something different to do in the winter time,” Munger said. “When it’s nasty outside or too cold, they can come here, get some books and come in here and play. Yes, it’s toys, but they’re still learning something.”

Munger added there will be Christmas crafts for children to take home with them.

“The kids love it and parents really do appreciate it because when you start getting cabin fever, it gives them an opportunity to get out of the house,” Munger said. “Plus, it’s local and free.”
