This year, Sikeston residents were able to decorate their yards for the holidays and compete for the mayor’s award. The contest ended Dec. 11 and the winner was announced Dec. 15.

Sikeston Mayor Greg Turnbow and members of the Tourism Advisory Board selected Burger’s house, located at 1303 Columbine, as the winner.

“We had more entries this year than we have in the previous two years, which is fantastic, and we hope to have even more next year,” Turnbow said.

Turnbow highlighted the theme and decorations of Burger’s.

“It wasn’t only my vote, but the tourism board voted as well, and it was a well-deserved award,” Turnbow said.

Burger said he was completely surprised to learn they had won the award, but he and his family were also thrilled upon learning the news. As the contest winner, the family received a glass award to display in their home.

According to Burger, he and his family really enjoy the Christmas season and decorate for it every year.

“We enjoy looking at lights ourselves,” Burger said. “My son, my wife and I just decided to decorate for the holidays like we do every year. Somebody mentioned the contest to us, and we entered and were lucky enough to win.”

Burger’s house and yard were decked out in Christmas lights, Disney-themed Christmas Mickey Mouse decorations, a large blow-up Grinch, an 8-foot-tall Santa Claus, and other festive decorations.

Turnbow said Burgers’ house reminded him of the town’s Christmas parade, which featured both Santa Claus and the Grinch, which he enjoyed.

“The picture that was taken during the day of the house that’s posted on the city’s Facebook page does not do it justice,” Turnbow said. “At night, when you see the house, you will see that they put a lot of work into it.”
