SIKESTON — Storms, holiday decorations, candles and, especially, heaters can all contribute to an increased risk of fire during the winter months.

With temperatures expected to drop this winter, many residents may be thinking about plugging in their space heater.

Space heaters, according to Lt. Zak Haskin of Sikeston Department of Public Safety’s Fire Division, can be a cause of home fires and fire deaths during the winter months.

“Always make sure to have good housekeeping around heated areas,” Haskin said. “Especially space heaters.”

According to Haskin, it’s important for people to prepare for the frigid weather and the dangers that come with keeping warm.

Haskin said to keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from heating equipment. The three-foot safety zone includes furniture, drapes, Christmas trees and electronics.

“Don’t use extension cords for heaters, and do not put any type of space heater under the house to keep pipes from freezing,” Haskin said. “Use good insulation and block off cold air drafts.

Haskin advised those who have a chimney and use wood heat to make sure the and everything is properly swept and to use “good-aged” wood.

According to Haskin, never use an oven or other cooking devices to heat up the house. Never leave cooking items unattended, and keep a fire extinguisher nearby at all times.

Haskin advised anyone who finds themselves in a fire or smoke emergency to evacuate and call 911, and the fire department will respond.
