Local nonprofits serve up fish meals on Fridays during Lent
SIKESTON — The Lenten season has officially begun, and various businesses, churches and community members will be holding fish meal fundraisers throughout the area.
The Sikeston American Legion Post 114, located at 333 S. Kingshighway, is serving its annual Cotton Carnival fish sandwiches during the Lenten season, except on Good Friday, which is March 29.
Tommy Staggs of the American Legion said the Legion is offering their fish sandwiches and crinkle-cut fries from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Fridays. Staggs said sandwiches cost $5 each, while crinkle fries cost $2.
“Drive up from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and you can get them through the drive-thru on the north side of the building or you can dine-in, too,” Staggs said.
Staggs said the Cotton Carnival fish sandwiches have been around for almost 80 years and are only available at the carnival which is held the last week of September.
According to Staggs, it was only in recent years the Legion started offering their Cotton Carnival fish sandwiches on Fridays during Lenten.
“It’s been a pretty good go for us,” Staggs said. “It’s how we raise money to put back into the community.”
SEMO Shriners Club in Sikeston is hosting a fish fry every Friday night throughout Lent. Friday night fish fries began Feb. 16 and will continue until March 22. Meals are served from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the SEMO Shrine Building on Garwood Avenue in Sikeston.
Gregg Price, the club’s secretary treasurer, said the menu includes fried catfish and baked beans, macaroni and cheese, hush puppies and more. Take-out orders cost $15, and adults may dine in for $18. Dine-in meals are all-you-can-eat. There will be complimentary drinks and treats.
“Our main thing is to support Shriners Hospitals for Children, which is why it’s so important that people come out and support the fish fries,” Price said. “We are completely a not-for-profit organization. We have the club here in Sikeston, so we have to be able to pay our bills, too, but the majority of the money goes to the hospital.”
