CHARLESTON, Mo. — A Cape Girardeau, Missouri, man will face trial for the New Year’s Day death of a Caruthersville, Missouri, man in Charleston.

A preliminary hearing was conducted Friday, March 22 in Mississippi County Circuit Court for Jimmy Hudson III, 18, of Cape Girardeau, who is charged with first degree murder, armed criminal action, unlawful use of a weapon and possession of a controlled substance, according to online court records. He was ordered bound over to Division I of Mississippi County Circuit Court for arraignment at 1 p.m. April 9.

The charges stem from the Jan. 1 shooting death of 20-year-old Malik E. Jones of Caruthersville.

According to initial reports from Charleston Department of Public Safety Director Robert Hearnes, at about 4 a.m. Jan. 1, officers with Charleston DPS responded to a report of shots fired in the 500 block of West Ada Street. A responding officer found Jones with several gunshot wounds; he died a short time later.

A homicide investigation began, and the agency was assisted by Missouri State Highway Patrol and the Mississippi County Sheriff’s Office, Hearnes said. That investigation led to a warrant for Hudson’s arrest.

Hudson is being held without bond in the Mississippi County Detention Center in Charleston.
