Scenes from the 2024 SOLAR Day
CHARLESTON, Mo. — Students learned about “all things outdoors” at SOLAR Day 2024 held May 2 at the Corse/DeLaney Farm in Charleston. This traditional event was started by Charleston R-1 teachers Annette Robertson and Dorothy DeField in 1986, and has since been teaching students about topics like fishing, conservation practices, outdoor skills, and so much more. SOLAR stands for Student Outdoor Learning Activities Retreat. The weather was incredible, and it was a near-perfect day for nearly 350 students to participate in fun outdoor learning, according to B.J. Babb, SOLAR Day coordinator. This was the second year for special lunch sessions for preschool, first and second graders who traditionally have not been a part of SOLAR Day, Babb said. This was also the second year for The Oak Trees, a group of high school students who got to visit stations and connect with SOLAR Day on their level. Favorite stations like pond life, fishing and reptiles returned this year, and have been a part of SOLAR Day since the beginning. Some new stations popped up this year, including bubbles and under your own influence, while the classic medallions and campfire cooking stations were brought back after several years.
