Residents reminded of their municipalities’ fireworks rules

 SIKESTON — As Independence Day approaches, local municipalities are reminding residents of their respective rules for the use of fireworks.

In Sikeston, the city wishes everyone a safe and happy Fourth of July, but residents need to remember fireworks are not permitted for discharge in the city, said David Jenkins, communications manager for the City of Sikeston.

In April 2022, Sikeston voters chose not to pass an ordinance allowing fireworks to be discharged within city limits, he noted.

“Please be considerate of your neighbors, their pets and your neighborhood in respecting the prohibition of fireworks in Sikeston and take the time to enjoy the organized annual fireworks display,” Jenkins said. 

Sikeston Elks Lodge 2319 will once again sponsor its annual fireworks display at the Recreational Complex beginning at dusk Thursday, July 4. Troy Wisdom with Rainbow Fireworks will again be the vendor in charge of the display.

Fireworks, rockets, powder, firecrackers and other combustible materials may only be discharged within the city limits of Portageville from Tuesday, July 2 to Friday, July 5 and only until 10 p.m. each night.

From June 20 to Wednesday, July 3, citizens in East Prairie are allowed to shoot fireworks between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. On Thursday, July 4, citizens can shoot fireworks between 8 a.m. and 11:59 p.m. These rules only apply to those living within the city limits, according to city officials.

East Prairie citizens are encouraged to view the fireworks show from the high school football field at 9 p.m. Thursday, July 4.

Residents of New Madrid can shoot fireworks between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. from now through Wednesday, July 3 and on Thursday, July 4 until midnight. They can also take in the fireworks show at 9 p.m. Saturday, July 6 from he Mississippi River levee in New Madrid. Individuals can drive up to the levee to sit or bring their lawn chairs to enjoy the show.

In the city of Charleston, residents are not permitted to shoot fireworks within city limits because it is illegal. These rules do not apply to those who live outside the city limits. The First Assembly of God Church in Charleston will put a fireworks show at 9:15 p.m. Thursday, July 4 at A.D. Simpson Park on Main Street in Charleston.

City of Morley residents are permitted to discharge fireworks from sunset through 10 p.m. July 1-3; from dusk until midnight July 4; and from dusk until 10 p.m. July 5. Exceptions to the ordinance are previously board-approved events, Community Betterment committee and city events, according to city ordinance. Children under the age of 16 years should also not discharge fireworks in the city, according to the ordinance.

In the City of Benton, fireworks can be discharged from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. July 1-3 and from 10 a.m. to midnight July 4, according to the Fireworks City Ordinance No. 622. No fireworks are allowed after July 4. Also, on person under 12 years old shall shoot off fireworks without adult supervision. Also no fireworks in any capacity in any of Benton's parks are allowed. This ordinance will be enforced with possible citation, according to city officials.

In the City of Oran, residents can discharge fireworks June 20-July 2 between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. The display and discharge of fireworks is permitted from 10 a.m. to midnight July 3-4. No fireworks are to be discharged or displayed after July 4 or before June 20, according to city ordinances. The Annual Fourth of July Oran Picnic Thursday, July 4 at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Oran will begin with activities starting at 11 a.m. with fireworks around dusk.
