CHARLESTON, Mo. — On Friday, June 14, in honor of Flag Day, members of the Charleston Community came together for a flag retirement Ceremony. The event, held around a newly completed flag retirement pit, saw the respectful and honorable destruction of over 100 old and tattered American flags.

These flags had proudly flown over homes and businesses in the area and were ready for retirement. The retired flags had been collected over time in a drop box managed by the local Boy Scout Troop and the Charleston Kiwanis Club. Once collected, the flags were honorably folded and kept in safe storage until this appropriate time for disposal.

Community members gathered to pay their respects and participate in the solemn ceremony, reinforcing the values of respect and patriotism. The event was a testament to the community’s dedication to honoring the symbol of American freedom and unity.

The evening ceremony was conducted under the watchful eye of several veterans, including members of the local American Legion and VFW in Charleston. The fire pit, which served as the centerpiece for the ceremony, was recently completed by Eagle Scout Dearmont Goodin. The pit was dedicated that evening in memory of Goodin’s father, Lindsay Goodin Jr.

For those looking to retire their American flags, a flag drop Box is available at 303 S. Sixth St., along the driveway under the large Oak Tree. The community is encouraged to use this service to ensure their flags are retired with the dignity they deserve.

Plans are already in place for another flag retirement event scheduled for Monday, Nov. 11 which is Veterans Day.
