MOREHOUSE, Mo. — Steven Anthony "Tony" Smith, a dedicated firefighter and beloved community member, passed away on July 24, 2024, at his home in Morehouse.

Born on April 18, 1962, in Los Angeles, California, to the late Tom Smith and Jean Driskell Smith. Steven's passion for public service was shown throughout his life. He served as the Morehouse Fire Chief for 15 years and was a member of both the Miner Fire Department and the Scott County Rural Fire District for over a decade. His dedication extended to the New Madrid County Civil Defense and the National Weather Service Storm Spotter program.

Beyond firefighting, Steven's life was filled with music. He was a disc jockey at KSIM early in his career and owned a traveling sound system, bringing music to countless parties, weddings, and events throughout the tri-state area. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish Smith Security, Colors Teen club, Bulldog Alley Teen club, and a "Country Cooking" restaurant.

On a personal level, Steven was a loving husband to Linda K. Martinez/Smith until her passing in 2023. He was a proud father to seven sons - Mark Martinez, Jimmy Martinez, Tommy Martinez, Chad Price, and Brad Smith. He was preceded in death by two sons, Scotty Martinez and Bryan Smith. He leaves behind 23 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren. Tony is also survived by four brothers, Frankie, Stan, Don, and Gary; and two sisters, Brenda and Kathy; He is also preceded in death by two brothers, Dennis and Doug; and one sister, Linda.

Steven was known for his kind heart, willingness to help anyone in need, his infectious smile and for coining the phrase "WOW". He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the community he so faithfully served.

Public visitation will be Monday, July 29 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Ponder Funeral Home in Sikeston, Missouri. The funeral service will be on Tuesday, July 30 at noon at Ponder Funeral Home in Sikeston.

Interment will follow at the IOOF Cemetery in Charleston, Missouri.
