SIKESTON — The Sikeston Tourism office is seeking the public’s help to honor 72 years of rodeo history at the new Sikeston Rodeo Museum.

“It’s an exciting time to plan a new rodeo museum in this historic building that can be enjoyed by future generations and will preserve Sikeston’s rodeo heritage,” said Kathy Medley, executive vice president of Sikeston Chamber, Economic Development, Tourism. “We are extremely grateful to the Sikeston Jaycees, the City of Sikeston and the public for their support of this project.”

Located in the newly renovated historic building at 215 N. New Madrid St. in Sikeston, the museum is currently in the design and development stages.

“The Sikeston Tourism office is seeking historic rodeo memorabilia and film footage for museum exhibits,” Medley said. “Let us know if you have an item(s) to be considered for display.”

Items of interest include anything historically related to the Sikeston Rodeo including, but not limited to, saddles, chaps, newspapers, film footage, programs, posters, pictures of cowboys, cowgirls, entertainers throughout the years, clothing worn by the athletes and performers, and other items of public interest for preservation.

The new museum’s home was constructed in 1932 as the original Sikeston Post Office. It housed several different entities in the last 92 years and has been mostly vacant for many years.

“In an ode to the building’s historic past, it is being named The Sikeston Post,” Medley said about the building.

In addition to the museum, the Sikeston Post also houses the Sikeston Visitors Center, Chamber, Economic Development, Tourism and Historic Downtown Sikeston offices.

“While we are in the development stages of the museum, we need to know if and what the public may have for donations and which items would fit well in the museum exhibits,” Medley said. “Let’s preserve Sikeston’s rodeo heritage together.”

A Sikeston Rodeo Museum donation, or loan, form is available on the tourism website: www.sikeston.net/tourism. Donors can fill out the form with details of the item(s) they would like to be considered for museum exhibits. The museum is is a 501(c)3 organization.
