Local schools prepare to head back to class for the new year

SIKESTON — Many students and teachers in the area will return to school later this month, and school districts are preparing now for the new school year.

Sikeston R-6 School District’s first day of school for student attendance is Tuesday, Aug. 20, but several back-to-school events will take place before then.

For example, the high school freshman orientation is slated for 8 a.m. to noon Monday, Aug. 12. They will also have a makeup session for high school book checkout from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. as well as the first day of fall sports practices.

Sikeston school district will hold a back-to-school breakfast on Aug. 13 for their staff, and the Sikeston Junior High open house will take place from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Aug. 14.

The Sikeson Middle School open house is from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 15, and the Kindergarten Center open house is from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Aug. 15. Wing Elementary’s open house is from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Aug. 15.

On Aug. 19, Lee Hunter Elementary will host an open house from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., and Southeast Elementary will have one from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

The Sikeston Alternative School and Sikeston Career and Technology Center will host an open house from 5 to 6 p.m. Aug. 20.

For the New Madrid County R-1 School District, the first day of school is Monday, Aug. 19.

Central High School’s and Central Middle School’s open houses will be from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.Tuesday, Aug. 13.

The open houses at Lilbourn Elementary, Matthews Elementary and New Madrid Elementary will all take place from 3 to 6 p.m. Aug. 15.

New Madrid County R-1 School District employees will return to school on Monday, Aug. 12.

Charleston R-1 School District will hold an open house on Monday, Aug. 19, starting at 5 p.m. Charleston’s first day of school for the entire district is Wednesday, Aug. 21. 

East Prairie R-2 School District will have their new teacher orientation on Monday, Aug. 12 and Tuesday, Aug. 13. Staff orientation will be from Aug. 14 to Aug. 16. These events will be full days.

The first day of school for East Prairie School District is Tuesday, Aug. 20. 

Scott County R-4 School District “Kelly Schools” will have their open house from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Aug. 15. On Wednesday, Aug. 21, Kelly students and teachers will return to the classroom for the new year.

Scott County Central School District will have their open house at 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 19. There will also be a community dinner after the open house. Wednesday, Aug. 21 is the first day of school for both students and teachers.

Portageville School District will have its open house from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 15. Also on Aug. 15, Sixth grade orientation will be in the high school gym from 5 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and freshman orientation will be from 5:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Districtwide, Portageville’s first day of school is Monday, Aug. 19.

The Oran R-3 School District will have an open house from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Aug. 15. Locker selection for students in ninth through 12th grades is 8 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, Aug. 12 and Tuesday, Aug. 13. The first day of school for student attendance is Tuesday, Aug. 20.

St. Francis Xavier in Sikeston will return to school on Thursday, Aug. 22 and they will also have picture day that day.

The Christian Academy in Sikeston will hold a prayer for their school at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 12 at the school with prayer and singing. An open house will be on Aug. 15 with school starts on Thursday, Aug. 22.
