SIKESTON — As most area school districts, including Sikeston Public Schools, headed back to class for the new year this week, motorists were reminded to pay attention and be aware of their surroundings, especially in school zones.

“We wanted to remind everyone to plan for increased traffic in the city due to student drop off and buses picking up students,” said Sgt. Tyler Rowe, public information for Sikeston Department of Public Safety and SPS school resource officer. “Please be mindful of the schools zones, plan accordingly to give yourself more time when commuting through town and be mindful of drop lines around the schools. Please be mindful of students walking or riding bikes to school as well.”

Rowe, who along with fellow SRO’s Brent Mullin and Nason Lane, also thanked Sikeston’s Street Department for painting fresh lines at the crosswalks to brighten visibility for students to use and motorists to heed.

“We hope everyone has a great start to the school year,” Rowe said.
