I have been with the Standard Democrat sports department since 2007. I took over as sports editor in May of 2011 and have been slightly crazy about sports since I can remember. I attended Southeast Missouri State University and Scott County Central High School. I co-created our sports web show "The Last Word" and my two children, Elijah and CJ. I was married to my wife, Angie, in May of 2014. I love to golf, I am an avid NBA2K gamer and root for the Fighting Irish on Saturdays.

Rain, lightning leads to 3rd place tie for NMCC

Due to rain, lightning and all other types of Mother Nature that never wanted to leave the O'Fallon area, the New Madrid County Central third place game against Hallsville was cancelled Friday morning. Each team was given a third place trophy and medals.

Bad luck weather-wise surrounded the MSHSAA state tournament all week leading to countless weather delays.

I'm sure NMCC would have rather played and earned a third place finish, but with the way things have been going with the weather and the tournament already pushed back until Sunday (possibly further after today) tournament officials made the right call IMHO.

YHO is correct. Congrats to the players, staff and NMCC fans. Memories for a lifetime. BTW-thanks for the great coverage for those of us that didn't make it to the tourney in person.

One has to admire the accomplishments of the New Madrid County Central baseball program this season.

In regards to the third-place games . . . what prevents teams from meeting at a central location next Saturday to play third-place games?

It is unlikely the Class 3, 4 and 5 third-place games will be played this weekend if my good friends from Missouri High School Activities Association want to get back to Columbia before Monday.

A debate regarding whether or not third-place games should exist at all in most sports currently exists in high school sports in Missouri. I think if we are going to agree they should exist we should play them. If not, don't schedule them and play the entire state basketball final four on the same week.

I will add I remain shocked efforts were not made to start the state tournament Monday night or play all Class 1 and Class 2 semifinals Tuesday. I do not think a tournament should be played at a facility that has an ordinance that lights have to be out by a certain hour if such an ordiance, as rumored, exists.

I will add one more thing. I like the fact Arkansas rotates the final four to every region of the state each season in most sports instead of playing the final four at the same place until 2016.
