I have been with the Standard Democrat sports department since 2007. I took over as sports editor in May of 2011 and have been slightly crazy about sports since I can remember. I attended Southeast Missouri State University and Scott County Central High School. I co-created our sports web show "The Last Word" and my two children, Elijah and CJ. I was married to my wife, Angie, in May of 2014. I love to golf, I am an avid NBA2K gamer and root for the Fighting Irish on Saturdays.

Thoughts from Rib City?

So the first weekend of the Rib City Shootout in Dexter for the boys is over and done with and I have to say, it was nice to get inside a gym again. I wasn't able to stay and watch as long as would have liked to, but the time that was spent there involved watching Sikeston, Charleston and NMCC.

My initial impression from watching just those three was that its June and not any team really blew me away and that's okay. It's 'summer ball' and its to be treated as such.

But it's never too early to speculate? Right?

Even defending Class 3 champion Madison College Prep, who played Sikeston and most viewers would arguably say was the best team there, was going through a bit of transition with new players and wasn't the force they will be come March of next year. That's to be expected at this time.

So, what were your thoughts on seeing our varsity basketball teams? Anyone surprise you? Any team show signs of good things to come? Or, will it be a long winter for some?

The good thing is, we'll have another dose of Rib City later this month and into July. Here are the remaining dates for both boys and girls.

Girls

June 14-15 and July 19-20

Boys

June 20-21 and July 12-13

Here's my thoughts I wasn't real impressed by any of the teams I saw but I was only there on Friday. I'm hoping the reason being its only summer ball. Charleston looked better than I thought with all the ones they lost. Sikeston needs some work but I'm sure come bball season it will be better and ppl need to step up and not rely on JT to try to do it all. New Madrid will probably get better. ND has a lot of depth and I think they will be decent . That's all I really seen except for like college prep and dyer county.

Here's what I saw. I'll start with the smaller schools.

Scott Central will be state contenders. Duh. They will be a tough out for anybody in Class 1. Banks is a stud. One of the best players in the area.

South Iron will also be a contender in Class 1. I believe if both of these teams win their district, they would meet in the sectional if I'm not mistaken. I was impressed with Ruble (at least that was the name on the back of the jersey).

Advance has a really, really good player in Lane Below.

Bernie is a team to watch for in Class 2. Same old Bernie. Hard-nosed tough kids that can shoot the lights out and compete extremely hard. They beat a short-handed Notre Dame team by 30 which is quite an eye opener. Obviously ND only had 7 kids for that game, but several of the main ones were there and Bernie was just very impressive.

NMCC looked pretty good at times. Jimerson alone will carry them to many wins and he makes the people around him better. They aren't as talented as last year but will be a threat every night with Jimerson who will make a case for the best player in the area.

I would rank Charleston ahead of NMCC at this point. Both Bogans and Webster give them a very good trio and they have some good roles guys. They are my favorite in Class 3 this year.

Whoever makes it out of Class 3 in the area will no doubt end up facing Madison/Imagine College Prep, who has reloaded with another very talented team. They are young and beatable, but I'm sure they'll be more than a handful in February and March after they've played together for a while.

Cape Central will be one of the most talented teams in the area. Good size in Cox (6-6) and Statam (6-4 and skilled) and quickness at guards. Capable of beating anybody on a given night and certainly one of the favorites in the area in Class 4, especially with districts at Cape this year.

Notre Dame is an enigma. I do think when the season is here they will be tough as nails as always, but they haven't seemed to have put it all together just yet this summer. They will be very, very, VERY deep. Almost TOO deep if that's possible. They have good size and good shooters. They struggled in the games I saw this weekend (although they never had their whole team there) but I never, ever count them out in the regular season.

And for my Sikeston Bulldogs. I liked a lot of what I saw and of course they have areas they will need to improve. Sikeston will have pretty decent depth. They will need to find a floor leader and work on shooting well consistently. But I saw enough to know they will be just fine, again.

I saw other teams but these are the ones that caught my eye and the ones I saw the most.
