SIKESTON — Sikeston is getting prepared for winter weather.

At Monday’s Sikeston City Council meeting, the Council authorized the purchase of 150 tons of road salt from Cargill at $86 per ton for a total of $12,900. The road salt will be used for local roads this winter.

In other action at Monday’s meeting, Council:

• Awarded the city’s employee health insurance to Mitchell Insurance.

• Authorized the surplus of the Sikeston’s Street Division’s 2000 GMC truck along with a Propatch pothole patcher. They will be sold as one unit through a governmental surplus equipment website.

• Conducted the first reading of a bill that would establish a Business License Review Board. The board would listen to appeals of revocations and suspensions of business licenses and decide on what actions should be taken.

• Conducted the first reading of a bill that would amend the definition of “amusements” and “amusement or entertainment,” the type of license or permit required, the hours of operation and to include having adequate licensed security for events that extend past 11 p.m.

• Conducted the first reading of a bill which would add “maintaining a public nuisance” section to municipal code. This would aid in preventing any structures to be used for frequent illegal drug use. Additionally, the owner or occupant or both may be charged with the offense of keeping or maintaining a public nuisance.

• Sikeston resident Sam Thomas addressed the Council about roofing issues he has in his residence, which is upstairs in a downtown building. Based on information presented, Council has asked City staff to present an action plan to them within the next two weeks.

• The UTV ordinance is still being drafted.

• The next Council meeting will be at 5 p.m. Monday. The Nov. 25 meeting has been canceled.
