CHARLESTON -- Mississippi County commissioners approved buying a new engine for the sheriff's department but would like to see deputies keep a closer eye on vehicle maintenance.

Commissioners approved the purchase of the replacement engine for the department's 2002 Trailblazer during their regular meeting Thursday.

"The motor locked up," said Sheriff Keith Moore.

Moore said Satterfield's in Sikeston had two 4.2 liter six-cylinder engines available: one with 40,000 miles on it for $950 and one with 15,000 miles on it for $1,050. Both have a 12,000 mile/six-month warranty, he said.

Other than the engine, the vehicle appears to be in good condition, Moore said.

Commissioners agreed the lower mileage was worth the extra $100.
