SIKESTON -- Races for the August Primary Election are forming as filing began Tuesday.
Local offices eligible for the Aug. 7 election included associate circuit judges, county commissioners, sheriff, assessor, collector-treasurer, county treasurer, public administrator, coroner, surveyor, and township or ward committee men and women. Filing ends at 5 p.m. March 27.
Two races are already set for Scott County offices after the first day of filing.
Incumbent Rick Walter filed for another four years as sheriff Tuesday but will have to make it past at least one opponent during the August primary as the challenger, Ron Merideth, has also filed as a Democrat.
Also finding himself in a race after the first day of filing is Democrat Donnie Kiefer, the incumbent second district associate county commissioner, although Kiefer will have to secure a win in August to ensure facing the first opponent filed: Will Yates will appear on the Republican ballot.
The other four filing Tuesday for Scott County positions were all incumbents and all Democrats: Dennis Ziegenhorn, for first district associate county commissioner; Teresa Houchin for assessor; Pam Dirnberger for public administrator; and Tara Mason for the two-year unexpired recorder of deeds term.
As of 5 p.m. Tuesday, several individuals had filed for office in Mississippi County.
