SIKESTON — Phyllis West, age 69, passed away on May 26, 2021, at Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston.
She was born on Oct. 31, 1951, in Lampasas, Texas, to the late Ermon McKinnie and the late Marion Simmons McKinnie Skaggs.
She lived most of her life in Sikeston where she raised her three children as a single mother. She was very dedicated and hardworking, giving nearly 50 years of her life in the public service field. The last 19 years she enjoyed her work with the Sikeston Public School System. During these years, she met and worked with a lot of incredible people and made special friendships along the way. She was sweet, kind and always kept a smile on her face no matter what. In May of 2020 she finally decided to hang her name tag up and she retired. For the last year of her life she spent it at home relaxing and secretly battling her illness by herself until the day of her calling. She was an outstanding, strong, tough woman that many will miss ever so dearly. She left a huge impact on more people than she could ever imagine. May she forever rest in peace.
She is survived by two daughters, Popsie Morphis (Michael Fuqua) and Tamara (Donnie) Chadd; two brothers, Rowland (Brenda) McKinnie and James (Mary) McKinnie; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and two nieces and one nephew all of Sikeston.
In addition to her parents and stepfather, Closkie Skaggs, she was preceded in death by her son, Jason Stockton; and a special friend, James “Bo” Brown.
There will be a celebration of her life held on June 2, 2021 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Nunnelee Funeral Chapel in Sikeston.
