SIKESTON -- Mary Elizabeth "Polly" Burns, 92, died Feb. 13, 2013, at her granddaughter's home in Dexter. Born Dec. 22, 1920, in Scott County, to the late Clarence F. And Sallie Franklin Johnson, she was a housewife and of the Baptist belief. On June 12, 1937, in Charleston, she married Thurman "Syl" Burns Sr., who preceded her in death on Dec. 21, 1988...

SIKESTON -- Mary Elizabeth "Polly" Burns, 92, died Feb. 13, 2013, at her granddaughter's home in Dexter.

Born Dec. 22, 1920, in Scott County, to the late Clarence F. And Sallie Franklin Johnson, she was a housewife and of the Baptist belief.

On June 12, 1937, in Charleston, she married Thurman "Syl" Burns Sr., who preceded her in death on Dec. 21, 1988.

She was also preceded in death by one son and daughter-in-law, Thurman S. Burns Jr. and Linda Burns, three brothers and one sister.

Survivors include: three sisters Linda Cantrell of Blodgett, Glenda Meltabarger of Union and Vivian Stephens of Hazelwood; one granddaughter and her husband, Brenda and Daniel Slavings of Dexter; and one great-granddaughter.

Services were conducted today at Ponder Funeral Home, with the Rev. Larry Williams, pastor of Mt. Pisgah Church in New Madrid, officiating.

Burial followed in the Sikeston City Cemetery.

Pallbearers were: Daniel Slavings, Robert Slavings, Kyle Slavings, Jeffrey McClain, Tim Cazee and Tom Cazee.
