SIKESTON - Jeanne Williams' first few hours as the newly elected president of the Sikeston Public Schools Board of Education proved not to be quite what she had expected. Halfway through the board meeting about 20 members of Mothers Against Violence in Schools filed into the room. Janice Dukes read a letter of a parents pleading for security from violence in the school system. "The law says we have to send our children to school or we go to jail. The same law says if we are abusive parents we go to jail. In that case, every parent who sends their child to Sikeston Public Schools should be in jail, because they are being abused or seeing abuse every day," she read. Although the group was included on the agenda, board members were unaware of the specific reason MAVIS had asked to be heard.
