DEXTER -- The Sikeston tennis team improved to 8-2 on the season as they defeated Dexter 7-2 on Wednesday at Dexter High School.
"We had some good performances and once again we played real well in doubles," said Sikeston coach Brian James. "Hopefully we can keep improving."

PERRYVILLE -- The Sikeston Bulldog track and field boys team took second place in the 20-team Perryville Invitational on Tuesday.
Sikeston's 88 1/2 points put them in second place behind Poplar Bluff's 102 points, a team the Bulldogs had been consistently beating all season.
But Sikeston coach Jerry Dement was pleased with his team's performances as they out-distanced numerous Class 3, District 1 opponents in the meet.
"They're starting to step it up," said Dement. "We're improving week to week. I wasn't for sure how we were going to be as young as we are, we're sophomore dominated with a few seniors and juniors and now we've got some freshmen starting to contribute. May is the month that we start to key in on. We led the whole meet until the last two events. The kids are starting to understand what it takes to perform at a championship level."
Sikeston had several first place performers.
Stephon Turner took first in the 110 meter high hurdles.
The Bulldogs' 4 x 200 meter relay team, comprised of David Stovall, Brandon Wright, Brandon Washington and Tommie Strong, also took first place.
Salamar Cox took first place in the shot put, Andre Goodwin captured first in the high jump and freshman Dominic Fondon took first in the triple jump.
"We're getting better -- we always want to challenge for the district crown and with the way it's shaking out, it may come down to us and Potosi," said Dement. "Right now we're ahead of where I thought we'd be. We don't point in any of the distance events, but we seem to point in everything else."
On the girls side, Sikeston placed 10th out of 20 teams.
"We don't have as much depth in the girls," said Dement. "We're pretty good in the sprints, but we don't have as much depth as we do in the boys."
The girls had no first place performances, but they had a couple of second place finishes in the 4 x 100 and 4 x 200 meter relays.

DONIPHAN -- A familiar face will return to the sidelines at Doniphan.
Two weeks after Shawn Gibbs resigned his post, former assistant coach Jason Andrews has been hired on as the next boys basketball coach.
"I think he's a really good fit," Doniphan athletic director Jimbo Blackwell said. "He's been here before, he knows our kids, he knows our area.
"He's got a great work ethic, we just think he's a great fit for our program."
Andrews, who was head boys coach at Oran the past two seasons, returns to the school were he started his coaching career. He could not be reached for comment Wednesday morning.
The Alton graduate coached under Shane Benson at Doniphan before moving on as an assistant at New Madrid for two seasons. Then he took over the helm at Oran.
In just his second year at Oran, Andrews led the Eagles to the Class 1 District 2 title game, losing to eventual state runner-up Bell City.
Oran finished the season 12-14.
Andrews will be taking over for Gibbs, who finished with a 70-40 record in four seasons with the Dons. During his tenure, Doniphan won two district titles, including this season in which the Dons finished 25-4.
Doniphan's coaching change is just one of several in Southeast Missouri for next season.
Poplar Bluff recently hired former Charleston and University of Missouri standout Lamont Frazier.
New Madrid selected former player Travis Day as its next coach.
Twin Rivers is still searching for a replacement for Jim Vaughan while Oran and Caruthersville also have openings.
Andrews will meet with his new team at 2 p.m. today.
"He's very excited and passionate about the job," Blackwell said. "He wanted to be Black and Gold again -- it's kind of home to him."
