SIKESTON - The Sikeston Bulls got spanked at home on Tuesday night by Kitty League leaders Owensboro, Ky. Oilers 9-0 at the VFW Stadium.
It was an uninspired effort by the Bulls as they failed to put back-to-back hits together in a inning and Sikeston pitchers combined to walk eight Oiler batters in the contest while throwing seven wild pitches.
Owensboro's Greg Dowdell earned the complete game win for the Oilers. Dowdell allowed only one Sikeston runner to reach second base, scattered six hits, no walks and struck out five.
The top of third inning for Owensboro was indicative of the night for the Bulls. In their half of the third, the Oilers scored three runs on only one hit. Sikeston starter Andrew Moss threw three wild pitches in the inning and walked three batters.
Will Devick collected the lone RBI for Owensboro with a sacrifice fly to drive in Jordan Bonyai. The Oilers led 3-0 after three innings of play.
The Bulls never mounted a challenge to the Oilers and the game remained 3
-0 heading into the seventh when Owensboro opened up the flood gates.
Chris Scoggins drove in two runs with a single in the seventh. The Oilers tacked on three more runs in the eighth on RBIs by Kirk Seddon, Timmy Wimsatt and Devick.
Casey Martin ended the offensive onslaught for Owensboro with a titanic home run to left field in the ninth and the Oilers evened the four-game series at one game apiece with a 9-0 thrashing of the Bulls.
Bonyai, Seddon, Devon Franklin and Timmy Wimsatt had two hits apiece for the Oilers. Scoggins drove in two runs to lead Owensboro while Devick, Martin, Seddon and Wimsatt had an RBI apiece.
Tyler Martin and Craig Session paced the Bulls each going 2-for-3. Adam Darby and Greg Dees each had a single.
Moss was ineffective on the mound for the Bulls giving up three earned runs in six innings, allowed five hits, walked six and had one strike out.
While Moss struggled as the starter for Sikeston, the Bulls' bullpen was nonexistent in relief. Two Sikeston relievers combined to pitch three innings giving up six earned runs, six hits, walked two and struck out one Oiler batter.
The Bulls left only four runners on base, while Owensboro stranded seven runners. The lone bright spot for the Bulls was their defense as they turned two double plays and did not commit any errors in the contest.
Sikeston (11-27) and Owensboro (24-13) will play the third game of the four game series today at 7:05 p.m. The final game of the series will be played on Thursday at the VFW Stadium with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m.
