After a turbulent season cut short by dwindling numbers, the New Madrid County Central girls’ basketball team is ready to soar again, with a renewed focus on building a strong program and developing young talent.

Last season’s abrupt end was a setback, but it has also served as a catalyst for change and growth.

The team is committed to completing a full season this year, focusing on teamwork and resilience.

“Our goal is to slowly try to turn this program around one day at a time with positive energy, hard work, high energy and effort,” said NMCC coach Dana Woods. “The goal is to have a fast-paced, high-scoring team. But right now, we are just trying to learn each other and learn how to work with each other on the court.”

Returning to the court are key players like Destiny Hughes, a senior forward known for her strength on the boards and inside presence.

Junior guard Jordan Maltbia brings defensive prowess and energy, while senior guard Emani Summers, a standout who returns after spending a year at Cape Central, adds speed and versatility.

Summers, recognized as one of the fastest players in the area, was an All-SEMO Conference player the past two seasons and is expected to be a significant contributor on both ends of the court.

The infusion of new talent is a crucial component of NMCC’s strategy to rebuild.

Freshmen Orangie Jackson, Jalisa Jennings, and Jordenn Bevly are expected to make an impact with their quickness and defensive tenacity.

Jackson and Jennings, both guards, have shown potential to be threats offensively and defensively, while Bevly is noted for her hustle and energy.

Additionally, senior guard Tamiah Word, a recent addition to the team, is anticipated to be a major scoring threat.

Woods is optimistic about the team’s defensive capabilities, emphasizing their speed and the importance of cohesive movement on the court.

“I’m hoping we will have a very strong defensive team,” Woods said. “We are a very quick team, we are working on moving as one on the court.”

The Lady Eagles’ journey is not just about winning games but also about building a sustainable program.

As they prepare for the upcoming season, the team is focused on learning to work together and harnessing their collective strengths.

NMCC opens the season against Charleston in the Riverbend Classic on Nov. 30 and will compete in Class 3, District 1 this season.
