SIKESTON - The 20th Annual American Legion Cotton Carnival will begin its four-day round of festivities in Sikeston Sept. 23 and end with the gala queen's ball Sept. 26, it was announced by James Warf, commander.

NEW MADRID - New Madrid County Central students Vonnedele Wilson and Kim Hickman placed first and second in French spelling competitions at the Foreign Language Fair in Cape Girardeau April 14. Vonnedele is the daughter of Ms. Irene Reel of New Madrid and Kim is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gary Hickman of Matthews.

NEW MADRID - A month from today, New Madrid residents should have some idea of the interest of riverboat gaming companies in coming to their community. The city council unanimously approved a letter to be submitted to 58 gaming companies nationwide seeking proposals on

establishing a gambling boat along the city's riverfront.


SIKESTON - Sallie Reed is a woman who knows what motherhood is all about. She raised seven children and three grandchildren alone. At 102, she has given her children a wealth of knowledge about parenting. In return, she has gained their respect.


PORTAGEVILLE - Michelle Glover and Cindy Mattingly represented Portageville High School at the SEMO Business Education contest at New Madrid County Central High School. Glover won first place in computer knowledge and Matting was first in accounting II.
