Shelton Rhodes

DEXTER - Nathaniel Shelton Rhodes, 89, formerly of New Madrid, died Dec. 25, 2003, at the Crowley Ridge Care Center.

Born Sept. 5, 1914, in Point Pleasant, son of the late Roy Lee and Eunice Vera Puckett Rhodes, he was a retired Farm Bureau Insurance agent.

On June 11, 1935, he married Una Mae Burchfield who preceded him in death on Feb. 10, 1995.

He later married Irene Rhodes who survives of the home.

Other survivors include: one son, Bill Rhodes of Dexter; one daughter, Anna Sweat of Los Banos, Calif.; one brother, Harold G. "Scrogg" Rhodes of Kewanee; four sisters, Louise Poynor of Kewanee, Helen Tollison and Violet Porter of New Madrid and Betty Lou Corgan of Sikeston; and six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by three daughters, Cloise Lee Rhodes, Addie Pauline Rhodes and Vera Elizabeth Rhodes; three brothers, Jimmie Lee Rhodes, Roy Thomas Rhodes and Coyle William Rhodes; and one grandson, Greg Sweat.

Services were conducted at 10 a.m. today at Richards Funeral Home in New Madrid. The Rev. Keith Garlan, pastor of the Friendship Baptist Church in Dexter and Jack Allen officiated.

Burial followed in the Evergreen Cemetery at New Madrid.
