SPRINGFIELD - The Sikeston tennis team had a disappointing finish at the Class 1A-3A state tournament in Springfield on Friday.

Due to inclement weather, the consolation bracket was canceled and matches were to be decided by tiebreaker if the competitors were to split the first two sets.

Sikeston senior singles player Stephen Pobst lost in the first round to Neal Hopson of Westminster Christian 7-5, 4-6, (6-10).

Hopson went on to defeat Willie Spalding of Benton 6-0, 6-1.

The Sikeston doubles tandem of Ryne Vickery and Peter Jones lost in the first round to Sami Hawasli and Jimmy Nowicke of Priory 6-4, 0-6, (3-10).

Hawasli and Nowicke went on to win their quarterfinal match against Chillicothe 4-6, 6-0, (10-3).

Also, Charleston's Alec Peterson lost in the first round to Joseph Arnold of Springfield Catholic 1-6, 6-3, (8-10).

Arnold ended up losing to Mike Brozman of Pembroke Hill 0-6, 1-6.
