MINER - Construction was to begin today for a new motel in Miner, the Miner City Council was told during a meeting Wednesday night. Mark Halpin, a representative of Super Motel 8, reported the new 64-unit motel is to be built behind Bonanza Steak House. No restaurant will be included in the motel, Halpin said.

EAST PRAIRIE - The feasibility of a new police-fire department building, purchase of a new truck and the formation of a community watch program were among topics of discussion at Thursday evening's City Council session.

EAST PRAIRIE - East Prairie's Telly Caldwell picked up a blocker during Wednesday's sectional round of the Class 2A state tournament. The Eagles traveled to Festus, where they downed the St. Pius Lancers 59-20. Caldwell finished with an even total of 100 yards on seven carries, one reception for 9 yards, and two touchdowns. East Prairie will host John Burroughs Monday in the quarterfinal round.

SIKESTON - A Health Screening Fair was conducted recently to better acquaint citizens with their local health resources. Topics included diet, arthritis, diabetes and food handling. Also residents could take advantage of such services as having their blood pressure taken.
