Looking Back in Time at May 17

60 years ago

SIKESTON - Miss Lucille Finley was complemented with a kitchen shower Friday afternoon in the library of the South Grade School by members of the three sixth grades. Gifts were presented by Albert Keith Bess, Bobby Dye and Watson Everett, who were dressed as chefs in white aprons and caps.

40 years ago

SIKESTON - The Women's Division of the Chamber of Commerce, long just a stepchild to be "seen and not heard" in the activities of the male divisions, has suddenly become quite vocal and, judging from the events of the past few days, indications are that the women under the chairmanship of Mrs. Van Strickland Jr., are going to be a power to be reckoned with in future programs of the senior Chamber and not just a power behind the throne.

NEW MADRID - Dr. Mike Ford, a vice president at Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau, will be guest speaker at the New Madrid County Central High School graduation May 27. There will be 121 students in the second class to be graduated by NMCC.

EAST PRAIRIE - Drinking and driving and the consequences - death and injury - were emphasized during a docudrama Friday at East Prairie High School. Sponsored by SADD and the School and Community Drug Free Committee, the event was staged to impress the student body with what could happen on Prom Night. Police, emergency personnel and the coroner made the events realistic.


SIKESTON - Retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. Max D. Sullivan will offer the invocation at the dedication service of the Sikeston Veterans Park.
