SIKESTON - Lynn Waggener has purchased property at 116 W. Kathleen from Mrs. Mary Engle. The property, which includes four apartments, is being refinished by Waggener.

SIKESTON - The 25th anniversary of the founding of the General Baptist Church, located on Smith Avenue in Sikeston, is being observed this week. The Rev. Robert I. Jones has served as the pastor since 1954.


SIKESTON - Thirteen-year-old Mike Garner is the Sikeston Babe Ruth batting champion for the local season just finished. Seldom does a rookie lead the league in the batting race.

LILBOURN - Kaki LaValle, 16, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles LaValle of New Madrid, was named 1983 Junior Miss New Madrid County during Summer Fun Days festivities in Lilbourn.

SIKESTON - As AIDS continues to gain national recognition, the Scott County Central Future Homemakers of America Club is trying its best to educate area youths on the illness. The club recently placed second in the national FHA competition, Star events, All-Star Project July 9-16 in Anaheim, Calif, for their presentation of "Live and Learn," a project designed to explain HIV/AIDS to youths. Participating students won the district FHA level of Star Events for "Live and Learn" in June in Columbia, earning 99 out of 100 possible points.
